PAINTINGS
My aim is Publishing as many paintings as I can, depending on the amount of photos in my archive. The quality of the ones I have is very uneven, from transparencies, themselves of uneven quality, from images scanned from catalogues, if I find that the painting deserves publishing. In any case, quality and quantity, both ought to grow.
I have tried to use the least possible quantity of titles of subjects, covering with a certain clarity all the paintings. I always maintain that Figari painted “everything”. The exceptions could be young characters (his are probably citizens), and sports, except the bowlers (Italian immigrants), and bullfights (if these can be considered a sport).
I’m always on the lookout for new material, depending on what owners and curators (so far I have had no help from museums) provide. The archive is more of a concern than this website, but the needs are the same. When I started work I asked for transparencies; now, digital photos are enough, of about 1MB, taken of the painting without the frame, so that you can see even the edge of the cardboard, and any photo of the back that will show all labels or inscriptions, or their absence. I the painting is brought to me (time: just before noon), I will shoot the photo myself.
